Review: Depths of Vanalf
Depths of Vanalf by Brady Hunsaker
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I finished Depths of Vanalf by Brady Hunsaker, and I’ve got to say, it’s a promising start to the Grimnir Chronicles. The story follows Hallik and Elowyn, both young initiates at a school tucked away on the island of Avskild. They work hard to earn a place in Vanalf, a dangerous realm where survival means gaining potent magic and joining one of the unique classes.
There’s an immense tension throughout the whole book. The stakes feel genuinely personal and the world feels risky, which is something I always look for in epic fantasy. There’s also a rhythm to the training and lessons, and the threat of monsters never disappears. The story moves restlessly, so I never found myself wishing for more pace. What usually builds to a peak at the end of other fantasy stories seems to exist here from the first chapter.
The characters’ preparations make the coming conflict feel real, and the familiar idea of training for a heroic role is there. But the book goes further, digging into the roots of evil; it looks at how wrongdoing leaves lasting marks, like the undead figures discussed in the lectures. These moments make me think about how darkness can come from personal choices and ripple through society, which adds extra weight to the adventure.
Hallik and Elowyn start as determined students, and the way they grow kept me interested. Hallik’s search for answers about his history and Elowyn’s drive to master a particular kind of magic tie them together in a way that feels believable. Their friendship tethers the high stakes to something familiar.
What I liked most was the relentless energy combined with the philosophical touches. There’s a balance between exploring the world and surging ahead with the story. I never felt bored or sidetracked, everything fits and builds. The book dives into themes like loyalty, endurance, and keeping hope alive when threats seem endless, all drawn with a warmth that matches the dedication to the author’s father.
This is a story where the group grows together, the action never slows, and there’s something thoughtful beneath the surface, Depths of Vanalf is a strong beginning. I’m eager to see where the Grimnir Chronicles go next.
